Learning the Basics of AVID I - Session I

This course is open to 10 active members of the Guild. No Pre-requisites. 


Learning the Basics of AVID I is an introductory course designed for members who are transitioning from other NLE software and brush-up their AVID skills.  In this course, members will learn the process and basic skills to edit a film and TV project from start to finish.



  • Create / open a project using standard SD and HD formats
  • Properly ingesting media
  • Project organization
  • Organize clips by moving them from one bin to another
  • Create a sequence, and add or remove tracks as needed
  • Add clips to the sequence using Splice and Overwrite, or equivalent SmartTool functions
  • Remove sequence material using Lift and Extract, or equivalent SmartTool functions
  • Use Trim mode and SmartTool trim tools to change the length of sequence clips
  • Adjust the audio level (clip gain) of clips in the sequence
  • Add basic effects to sequence clips
  • Add transition effects to the sequence
  • Create and add static titles
  • Export  your cut

Edward Wardrip is a Brooklyn based editor. He's spent the past 5 years assisting on documentaries such as Ken Burns' Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies and Susan Lacy''s Spielberg. He's currently the editor on an upcoming Comedy Central Special hosted by Jordan Klepper of the Daily Show. He previously taught a course at the guild about Onlining Archival Heavy Films.
